Git-R-Done

Oh my… I think it’s true…

Larry the Cable Guy, a very funny comedian, is allowing the U.S. Air Force to use his “Git-R-Done” slogan on Air Force promotional materials.

I like Larry the Cable Guy. But I just don’t see “Git-R-Done” as the tag line for an Air Force commercial. What happened to “Aim High! Air Force!” or “Cross into the Blue”?

Of course I probably wouldn’t even have known about this recent development if my own daughter wasn’t enlisting in the USAF after finishing high school.

Why is this a problem for me? I think it’s because “Git-R-Done” is a pretty ragged catchphrase that doesn’t evoke strong feelings of confidence and pride in me.

But then again, as with many things in life, sometimes you need to take a devil-may-care attitude and just “Git-R-Done” because it needs to be done whether everyone likes it or not.

Like when I was in the Air Force in the early ’80s… I was told I’d have to learn to fire an M-16 rifle. I didn’t like it. I’m sure the men that had to train me didn’t like it. But we had to work together to “Git-R-Done.”

I’m not proud to admit that I had to go through the training twice–except that the second time the training specialist was really cute!

The first time I only hit the target a few times. The second time I managed to meet the minimum qualifications for the weapon. I was so proud of myself. I asked the range specialist if I could bring the target home with me to hang on the wall in my barracks room.

It was later that evening that I actually looked at the target. I counted the holes that bullets I had fired left in the paper. Interestingly enough… if every hole had been a bulls-eye, I still wouldn’t have totalled enough points to meet the minimum qualifications.

I was forced to choose one of three conclusions:

  1. The training specialist didn’t want me back on his firing range
  2. The training specialist was incompetent and couldn’t count
  3. or

  4. Flirting pays off

Of course I believe Option 3 is the only rational conclusion.

And as Larry the Cable Guy says, “I don’t care who you are, that’s funny.”
