Do You Walk Your Talk?

I had lunch with a good friend yesterday… a fellow dreamer/achiever like myself.

We updated each other on our business/super hobby progress, and challenged each other to keep moving forward in big ways.

She asked me why I had decided to change my focus back to public speaking after a short stint as a coach. The answer was simple: I was tired of working with people (one-on-one) who weren’t ready to walk their talk.

Although on one level I enjoyed the weekly calls and could definitely get excited about their goals and how I might help them achieve them, I also felt frustrated when they brought more excuses than progress reports to the next call.

Occasionally a client would have a valid excuse. By this I mean that she would have made a conscious decision to NOT act based on a higher priority or an uncertainty about how to proceed. When that happened I could support the decision or help her uncover and overcome hidden fears that led her to her decision. When she didn’t know how to proceed, we could brainstorm solutions together.

But most of the time my clients didn’t have reasons… they just didn’t do what they said they’d do.

Finally it got to me. I knew that I couldn’t keep working with people who wanted to achieve something but weren’t willing to put in the time and energy to do it. I know that dreaming without taking action turns life into a nightmare of disappointment and frustration.

What are you doing to turn your dreams into reality?

Are you stepping out of your comfort zone into a place that seems scary and overwhelming? It’s what you need to do to achieve your goals.

Are you taking consistent, persistent actions to find the people, resources and skills you need? It’s what you need to do to achieve your goals.

Are you changing your thought process from “maybe someday” to “starting today”? It’s what you need to do to achieve your goals.

What can you do TODAY to bring you one step closed (or even “half a shuffle” closer) to your goals?

Now the question is… will you do it?

Let me know what you did today to make your dreams come true?
