It’s Impossible Not to Smile
Last night my husband and I joined hundreds of other parents, siblings, grandparents and friends at the Westbrook All City Choral Concert. This event showcases the chorus groups from grades 5 thru 12.
Every year Westbrook offers an All-City night for both chorus and band. It’s a wonderful way to experience the progression of learning through music. For instance, in the fifth grade chorus everyone sings the melody. The high school chorus and elite Chamber Choir (which my daughter is part of) showcase 4-part harmony.
During one song in the combined high school chorus and Chamber Choir performance, the four sections sang variations of “do-be-do.” It was fun to listen to and enjoyable to watch. Even my ever stoic daughter allowed a tease of a smile to touch her lips. I looked at the audience and saw smiles every where.
It’s amazing what an impact musical non-words can have on our spirits. I think it’s impossible to not smile while hearing upbeat singing of “do-be-do” or Hanson’s
Mmmm bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du bop, ba duba dop
Ba du
So if you’re day is heading south (and I don’t mean traveling on an airplane) and your spirits need a lift, tune in to an oldies radio station. You may just experience a fun song with enough non-words to get your day back on track.
