In or Out, Cat!

I love my cat! Fluffy is a big old, 20-pound Maine Coon cat. I tell people he acts more like a dog than a cat.

For instance, if Fluffy wants to go outside, he waits by the door until someone notices. Good kitty.

But then, once you open the door, he just sits there! He doesn’t move!

“In or out, cat!”

But you can’t just shut the door because you know he wants to go outside. My husband gives the cat a gentle nudge with his foot, but sometimes that sends the cat scurrying into the other room and not out the door. I tend to close the door and wait for the cat to take a step toward it, then I open it again.

Arrrrrgh… it can be frustrating waiting for the cat to make up his mind and take action on something he indicated he wanted.

This morning as I waited for the cat to decide if he was in or out, I realized that I can be accused of the same behavior. I can make a decision, prepare myself to take action, and then just sit there. The door of opportunity opens and still I sit, staring out, wondering if I really want to do it.

Sometimes someone gives me a gentle kick in the pants and I scurry back to the safety and comfort that was behind me. Sometimes I just sit there until the door closes on me. Sometimes I’m lucky enough that the door opens again and other times I’m not.

Do you ever think you’ve made a decision but then when the time comes to act you sit there frozen with indecision?

Every once in a while Fluffy will walk through the door without hesitation. That’s how I want to be. What about you?
