Enjoy the Unusual While You Can
Ahhh… January in Maine. Not my favorite time of the year. Let’s face it, I’ll never be a snow bunny.
But this year has been amazingly warm. And rather than worry and fuss about global warming I’ve decided to just enjoy this unusual burst of good weather.
Imagine… me… willingly going for a walk outside in the winter… at 7:30 a.m. But at a balmy 43 degrees Fahrenheit I couldn’t keep myself inside. Sure it was a little cool–I wore my heavy coat, a hat and gloves–but the sun was shining brightly and the cold air on my cheeks felt invigorating.
Of course today’s excursion into the great outdoors put me behind in my recorded television programs. Now I’ll either have to find some other time to catch up or just erase a show unwatched. But this sacrifice is surely worth it.
I can live without television, but a lengthy exposure to fresh air in January is a rare treat for me. My treadmill and recorded television shows will just have to wait until the clouds and colder temperatures return.
What unusual or unexpected circumstances have occurred in your life? Did you take advantage of them? Did you make a sacrifice or two so that you could benefit from the unplanned opportunity?
It would have been easy for me to think: “I’ll walk later when the temps are even higher.” But in Maine in the winter, the temperature is as likely to dip as it is to climb. And whose to say that by early afternoon I’d have the time to take a walk? Who knows what other tasks or opportunities would vie for my attention?
I’m so glad I walked in the sunshine this morning. It was a beautiful way to greet the day.
