Overcoming Procrastination - One Small Step at a Time

Are there tasks on your “to do” list that have been there for weeks, months or ~gasp~ years? Do you know that overcoming procrastination is key to your success, but you can’t seem to help yourself?

One of the first steps to overcoming procrastination is to consider why you aren’t getting these tasks done?

One of the main reasons is something I dealt with this afternoon: The unwillingness to complete the task. Many times a task is boring and has more details than we want to deal with. That’s what I learned today.

I made a goal for myself that I would finally fill out the online form to become an affiliate for a marketing program that I just love. It’s called the Infoguru Manual by Robert Middleton. If you are a service professional looking for more clients and marketing is not your thing this manual and the accompanying support group, audio classes, and more will help you develop a marketing plan that works for you.

Anyway… I had gone to Robert Middleton’s web site months ago to sign up. But the fine print in the agreement caused my eyes to blur. The form seemed intimidating because I didn’t have all the information. So I used the old right-click button on my mouse and backed out.

Mind you, this task has remained on my “to do” list for months, maybe even that dreadful year. I’d think about doing it, but felt overwhelmed by the prospect of reading all that legalize. But today I just bit the bullet and got it done. I read the agreement and filled in the online form.

The task wasn’t hard, it was just boring. The task didn’t require specialized knowledge, it just required my focus. The task didn’t cost anything except for my time.

After wiping the bleary from my eyes, I decided to tackle the legalize of another program that was also on my “to do” list.

In just a couple of hours I managed to sign up as an affiliate for two programs that I strongly believe in. Both have provided me with outstanding service and information. (For those of you who do not know what affiliate programs are–affiliate programs are a way to generate income by referring website visitors to someone else’s product or service.)

By overcoming procrastination today, I did more than create a potential source of income. I also crossed ~in thick black permanent marker~ two nagging items off my “to do” list. What a relief that is!

Have you checked your “to do” list lately? What items have been linging on it for weeks, months or ~gasp~ years? What can you do today to begin the process (or complete the process) of crossing them off your list?

Overcoming procrastination isn’t difficult, it’s just a matter of getting things done. 8-)
