Get on the Ball - The Exercise Ball
Do you ever resist getting on the band wagon–just because? You know whatever it is is probably a good thing, but still you resist. You want to be different?
Well, that pretty much describes how I am. That’s why I miss so many trends and fads. And I’ve done it again.
I remember a year or more ago I heard about the wonders of exercise balls. They are 25-26″ in diameter and you sit on them and do various exercises with them. I thought they were stupid and a waste of money.
But yes, yesterday I bought one. Some people in a diet & exercise forum that I belong to were talking about them. One woman started using an exercise ball when her physical therapist recommended it to ease her back pain.
I inflated the thing yesterday, watched the accompanying DVD (dare I admit that I was eating a big bowl of Annie’s Shells and Cheese while watching?), and then put it in the corner. Now don’t scold me… the instructions said to let it sit for 24-hours and then finish inflating it.
About an hour ago my kids left the house to run an errand so I pulled the big purple exercise ball out of the corner and brought it to my computer desk. I’ve been sitting on it for about 60 minutes now and it’s been quite a unique experience.
I thought I’d have more trouble balancing on it. I thought it would be uncomfortable. I thought I’d hide it away again before my kids got home. But here I still sit, rocking and rolling on the ball. Using many small muscle groups to keep me stable while typing away.
Okay, what’s the lesson? There are many times when we hear about something that could be helpful to us. We hear of new ways of doing something. We hear of other people’s successes and fail to learn from and model their processes.
Sometimes we drop the ball because we don’t want to play the same game as other people. The question I’m now asking is: “Why not?” Why do I want to play alone when I can play with others?
So I may start reaping the benefits of this exercise ball later than other people, but I’ll still reap the benefits.
What could you start doing that others are doing or have done successfully? Think about your personal life, your relationships, and your career. Look around at whose getting or achieving the things you want. What are they doing and how can you start doing it?
