Learn or Let the Experts Handle It?

Have you noticed there are times when you should learn a new skill and other times when you should just let the experts do it? Today was such a day for me. My husband is a computer guru. For over 20 years he’s been the “go to” guy for computer problems.

But he recently changed careers and now has a very time demanding position. I hate to bother him with my computer wants and needs. So I decided I would figure out how to install this new blog software. Well, it didn’t take me long to realize that it was wayyyyy over my head.

Reluctantly I asked Gerry to help me out. The instructions claim it is a 5 minute install, but I knew my learning curve would require at least a couple of hours. When I explained to Gerry that I wanted to learn how to do this “behind-the-scenes” computer stuff, he assured me

  1. That he doesn’t mind doing it for me.
  2. That it wouldn’t take him long to do it (it did take more than 5 minutes though).
  3. That learning this stuff wouldn’t be the best use of my time.

It was easy for him to convince me that he should take care of installing this Wordpress software. While he did that, I was able to work on updates for my web site rather than learn a skill I would not often use.

Now I have the fun and challenge of tweaking my new blog to look just like I want it to. This is the type of work that I enjoy doing. This is the type of work that Gerry doesn’t bother with. He typically uses default colors, themes, and styles.

In the recent past we were both working on web sites that use the same software. Mine is Your Virtual Retreat. When he wanted to change a design aspect of the site, he knew that I would have the answer. And I did.

He could have learned, but why spend valuable time learning a skill that you won’t use often. Instead pay the experts to solve the problem in less time with fewer headaches.

And sometimes, when you are lucky, the payment will be in the form of a hug and a kiss, instead of dollars and cents. But even when you have to pay someone cold, hard cash… remember what you’ve saved in time and energy.
