Schedule Unscheduled Time for Yourself

Do you have a difficult time taking time just for yourself. Are you excellent at multi-tasking and proud of that skill? Do you wonder why someone would settle for accomplishing just one goal when you could take care of two, three, or even more at one time?

For instance… when you schedule time for a manicure do you take a friend with you? Do you see your manicure time as self-care time, professional image upkeep time, and time with a friend time? Three goals achieved in one 30-minute time frame!

Multi-tasking is great, don’t get me wrong. Scheduling time for self-care and time for friends is also great. But let me ask you this… have you ever scheduled time to hang out with a friend and then wished you hadn’t? Not because you don’t love spending time with this friend, but you just wish you could do something else? Perhaps you agreed to meet for lunch or a movie, but you’d rather take a walk in the woods instead. Or perhaps you scheduled a 3-hour “Day of Beauty” at your local day spa, but instead you’d rather browse through a bookstore.

Too often you may not be allowing yourself blocks of time to just do whatever strikes your fancy at the moment.

So I encourage you to schedule some time for yourself. Don’t invite a friend or make an appointment. Don’t plan it. Just schedule it. Then when your day and time arrives, make a spur of the moment decision to spend your time in a way that will excite, inspire, calm, sooth, or nurture your spirit.

You may end up calling a friend. You may end up taking a walk in the woods. You may end up at the local art museum or an antique shop you’ve always wanted to visit. You may end up sitting in the sunshine listening to the classical music radio station. It doesn’t matter what you do or if you do anything.

Schedule time to just be.
